The paper analyzes the evolution of the discipline of apprenticeship contract in Italy. The analysis is divided into 3 parts. The first part traces the phase between the 50 and 70, and decades of the 80s and 90s. The second part considers the legislation in force during the last decade, namely articles 47-60 of Legislative Decree n. 276/2003. The third part of the paper analyzes the provisions contained in the latest consolidated text of Legislative Decree n. 167/2011, as regards the notion of apprenticeship, the overall system of discipline and the division of regulatory responsibilities between State, regions and social partners. The Author also considers the prospects for further reform currently under discussion, also in relation to innovations that would be introduced in other types of contracts used today for entry into the labor market.
