The essay focuses on the complex qualification of the work performed by the Supervisors (“Dirigenti”), who are, at the same time, subject to employer’s power of direction and, on the other hand, entrusted with the organization of the activity of the rest of the workforce. The A. examines the recent attempts to extend to the Supervisors the – individual and collective – employment protections which traditionally featured blue collar and white collar employees, while maintaining the separation between the two groups. The A. reckons that the apparent crisis undergone by Supervisors as an autonomous category might be the mirror of the difficulties in drawing the boundaries of employment subordination relying on the mere, “good old” power of direction. Yet, he ultimately challenges the attempts to replace the latter with alternative criterions to ascertain employment subordination by looking from the standpoint (or, better, "through the lens") of supervisory work.
